Selling in a Slow Economy

Get Started and Don’t Quit

“If you always do what you’ve always done, you’ll always get what you always got.”

Improvement requires change. And it requires pushing harder than you’ve ever pushed before.

Most people let fear of failure and fear of the unknown hold them back from even starting anything new. They don’t realize that fear is a smokescreen. Then if they get started, most people quit as soon as they face any opposition. They don’t give themselves time to learn the skills they will need to succeed.

In order to succeed in anything you need two types of courage. The courage to get started and the courage to endure – to not quit.

The courage to get started comes from believing the goal is possible. The courage to not quit comes from your desire. If you want something badly enough nothing will make you quit.

Olympic coaches and top motivators and leaders understand that in order to help people achieve more, you have to help people believe it’s possible and constantly fuel people’s desire to reach the goal. By doing this, they help their people take bold risks – and win.

By boldly taking action and leaving behind what feels safe, massive change can occur – life-changing change. When Ruben decided to pursue his Olympic dream he did exactly that. He abandoned the safe easy path and he embraced the bold, difficult path.

After listening to Ruben’s presentation your people will be ready to embrace change and focus on the end result. They’ll find the courage, determination, fortitude and resolve to do what it really takes to win.

How to be an Olympian in Business and in Life

Using concepts from his best-selling books, “The Courage to Succeed” and “Becoming Unstoppable,” Ruben shares the success principles that took him from a second string soccer player to a four-time Olympian in the sport of luge. Principles that will help your audience excel both personally and professionally.

Organizations and individuals that are going through major change and going through challenges will especially benefit from Ruben’s message.

Your Audience Will Learn:

– How the mind works
– How to condition your mind for success
– How to become unstoppable in the face of challenges
– How to take your commitment to another level
– How to become confident and laser focused
– How to become a better leader

Motivation or Inspiration

Ruben has an incredible story. He was always the last kid picked to play sports in PE. When he was 21 years old he decided he wanted to compete in the next Winter Olympics. He lived in Houston at the time. Didn’t even know what snow looked like. He went to Lake Placid, took up the sport of luge and four years and a few broken bones later he was competing in the Calgary Olympics. He went on to become the first person to ever compete in four Winter Olympics each in a different decade.

As he jokingly says, “It doesn’t mean he’s good, it just means he’s old!” He competed in the Vancouver at the age of 47. Everybody thought he was a coach! But seriously, his story takes people’s excuses away because he’s an ordinary guy who did some extraordinary things.

Ruben sold copiers in downtown Houston for several years. He regularly speaks for sales kickoffs all around the world. In addition to selling copiers, Ruben sold paper shredders. He tells a story about how he knocked on every door of every floor of every building in downtown Houston many times. The only building he could never get into was the Enron building because it had such tight security. He always wondered what was going on in there. Now that he knows, he thinks that he could have sold them a million dollars worth of paper shredders!

When Ruben got started in the luge he thought he could do it all himself. Along the way Ruben realized that he would need help. He needed coaches, sled mechanics, doctors, chiropractors, financial assistance, etc. He needed to learn some leadership skills and create a team of people. Ruben was able to create a Dream Team and by working through his team he was able to realize his Olympic dream. Ruben believes leaders are trustworthy and passionate about their mission. Those two attributes make people want to follow a leader.

Anybody that can switch from soccer to luge at the age of 21 and make it to the Olympics knows a thing or two about embracing change.

The luge is a lot like race car driving. In car racing, you use different tires for different road conditions. In the luge you prepare your steels differently for different tracks and for different weather. You have to be ready for any changes in conditions. Whenever conditions change, whoever adapts first wins. Change is actually a good thing because it is like a blank slate – it gives you an opportunity to leave the competition behind.

If you don’t embrace change you’ll get left in the dust. Like a 6th-grade-educated truck driver who became a millionaire used to tell me, “If you always do what you’ve always done, you’ll always get what you’ve always got.”

In the 1970s, in the days of mechanical watches, Switzerland owned 50% of the world’s watch business. They refused to embrace the quartz movement technology and Japan took their business away. When fuel injection replaced carburators in the 80s, the mechanics that didn’t embrace that change went out of business. When the analog copiers I sold in the were replaced by digital technology, the salespeople who didn’t embrace change lost their jobs. Vinyl records got replaced by CDs, and today they are not putting CD players in laptops because that technology is being replaced.  In the telecommunications industry, they went from selling boxes to selling cloud services, the list goes on and on.

So deal with it. Everything that is comfortable for you right now is eventually going to change. But that’s a good thing.

Change is good. It gives you a chance to get ahead of your competition – as long as you embrace it.

Ruben trained for years as part of an international team made up up lugers from many different countries. Even though they competed against each other at World Cup races, European Championships, World Championships and the Olympics, they understood that their best chance was to work together and help each other out during the training week. This is because they were competing against powerhouse teams from Germany, Italy, Russia and Austria that would eat their lunch if they did not stick together.

You will always accomplish more working as part of a team than trying to be a lone wolf.

Overcoming Challenges

Ruben did not take up the sport of luge until he was 21 years old. He was a marginal athlete, lived in hot and humid Houston, Texas, and financed his Olympic training himself. People laughed at him and said he was crazy. He broke many bones on the way to the Olympics and eventually became the only person to ever compete in four Winter Olympics each in a different decade.

He’s an ordinary man who accomplished the extraordinary and THAT’S what makes him special. Because people in his audiences relate to Ruben and after hearing him are inspired to go the extra mile and fight for their goals and dreams.

Ruben will Help You Reach Your Objectives

He’ll Teach Your People World-class Best Practices That will Improve Their Performance

Depending on your objectives, Ruben can tailor his presentation in several directions. Ruben’s presentation is about what he had to do to get to the Olympics and how following those principles will help you realize your goals faster. Bottom line, he helps improve individual and organizational performance.   In order to get to the Olympics he had to:

  • Muster the belief in himself that he could eventually compete in the Olympics,
  • Reverse engineer the whole process,
  • Sell himself to the people whose help he would need,
  • Create a team of people to help him get there,
  • Raise capital to fund the Olympic project,
  • Become resilient in the face of huge obstacles, and finally,
  • Perform under huge pressure.

Ruben made it in spite of:

  • Not taking up the sport of luge until he was 21 years old,
  • Living thousands of miles from the Olympic luge training centers and,
  • Not being a great athlete to begin with.

He went on to become the only person to ever compete in four Winter Olympics each in a different decade.

“If you will listen to Ruben speak your life will change.”

– Lou Holtz
