K9 Officer and Drug Dog

I was speaking in Pittsburgh a few weeks ago. One of the other presenters was a Police Canine Officer. He brought his German Shepherd and was telling us about the training drug and explosive sniffing K9s.

It turns out that a top drug dog is literally one in a million…

It is Talented – It can be trained to detect drug or explosive scents (one or the other)

It is Focused – It will play “fetch” with a tennis ball that smells like drugs for hours on end. You can wave a steak in front of the dog, but it will focus on the ball.

It has a Great Work Ethic – Keeps going and going and going…

But here’s the kicker…

The K9 Officer said, “That “One in a Million” dog is no good unless it is trained properly by an expert trainer!”

Isn’t that always the case? Everyone has gifts and talents, but we all need mentors, coaches and teachers to help us maximize our talent. Talent and desire is not enough. An athlete needs a coach, and we all need mentors and accountability partners to help us realize out potential.

Find someone who’s already done what you want to do and follow their advice!
